Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, cheered as the ‘Realm’s Delight’ when she was young and later called the ‘Half-Year Queen,’ was the first-born child of KingViserys I Targaryen. Rhaenyra was King Viserys I’s only living child by his first wife, Queen Aemma of House Arryn. At the age of eight, she was made her father’s heir and grew up expecting to become the first ruling Queen of Westeros. Rhaenyra was also a dragonrider whose mount was Syrax. Her claim to the Iron Throne was challenged by her younger half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen, sparking the civil war known as the ‘Dance of the Dragons.’
Prince Daemon Targaryen was a member of House Targaryen, and the younger son of Prince Baelon Targaryen and a brother of King Viserys I Targaryen. He was the second husband to his niece Rhaenyra Targaryen, after Ser Laenor Velaryon’s ‘mysterious death.’ Daemon was also the most experienced warrior of his time and wielded the Valyrian steelblade Dark Sister. He was also a dragonrider and his mount was Caraxes who he took to battle during the ‘War for the Stepstones,’ where he declared himself ‘King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea.’ He was described by Maester Yandel as dashing, daring, and dangerous, but mercurial and quick to take offence. During the ‘Dance of the Dragons,’ he was proven to be a prominent supporter of his wife, Rhaenyra’s claim to the Iron Throne.
Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, cheered as the Realm’s Delight when she was young and later called the Half-Year Queen, was the first-born child of King Viserys I Targaryen. t the age of eight she was made her father’s heir and grew up expecting to become the first ruling Queen of Westeros. However, when King Viserys I Targaryen died in 129 AC, Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and possibly the former lover of Rhaenyra, defied the king’s will and instead crowned Rhaenyra’s half-brother, Alicent’s son Aegon II, who was ten years younger. This brought about the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, in which dragonriders fought each other. During the war, Rhaenyra rode her dragon, Syrax.
